Search Engine Optimization - SEO
What good is a website that doesn't get any traffic? The truth is that it's useless and that is
why the biggest challenge a website owner faces is getting visitors to their pages.
One of the biggest ways to do this is through Search Engine Optimization or SEO.
The concept of SEO is simple. Build your website and do the right things so you can be "found" when users type
in keywords in search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista, AOL and others.
Once a keyword relating to the products, services or opportunities that you offer is keyed into a search engine,
you want a direct link to your web site to emerge on top of the list.
Here are some basic tips on how you can make it to the top of the list of search engines, and
use your SEO techniques to benefit your web site and home business:
1. SEO is a long term technique so pick a domain and stick with it.
It will take some time before your web site will show up in a particular search engine, like Google, so it
better to use an existing domain that you've had for awhile rather than switching to a new one. If your just
getting started than put some thought into choosing your domain so you don't want to change it a few months down
the line.
2. Know who your target audience is and aim to please them.
Search engines are looking for the most relevant and informational websites to display in their listings.
Obviously their goal is to satisfy the searcher using their search engine. For this reason you want to make
sure your website is full of useful and full of valuable information to your target market.
For example, if you are selling a dog training product you want your website to be full of information and
articles relating to dogs and training dogs.
3. Search for the right keywords.
Having strong keywords and keyword density is another important factor in Search Engine Optimization. Choose
several keywords and key phrases that relate to your website and what you are selling.
Going back to the dog training example, some good keywords would be as follows:
dog obedience training
house training a puppy
how to train a dog
You will notice that most of these are "Key Phrases" which is a string of words put together. Not only are these
more precise than just "Dog" or "Dog Training" but also give the website a better chance of being found because of
less competition.
When choosing keywords, you want to put yourself in the place of someone searching for your product, service or
opportunity. What would they type into Google that would match perfectly with what you are selling?
4. Consider your target market when designing your web site.
The design itself would include the general theme of the web site. You should also pay attention to smaller
details such as color, font style and size.
Make sure that the web site is user-friendly and don't forget to insert helpful articles, tips, hints and
related links that can be shared to other users. It is a good thing to have an option to send a link or an article
to a friend, which will add more users and increase your client base.
5. Concentrate on the web site content.
Regularly update the content of your web site so that old and new users can find something new when browsing
through your site.
Make the content brief and precise. Writing an essay which has more than 600 words will make the users lose
interest, since most of them do not actually read but just skim through the text to find something interesting.
Again, these are just some basic SEO concepts to get you started on the right path. In this section of
